Roland Extra Virgin Olive Oil Receives Quality Seal

Roland® Extra Virgin Olive Oil packed in Italy has received the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA) Certified Quality Seal. Roland® Extra Virgin Olive Oil is packed in Italy and has a perfect green-gold color, clean aroma, and smooth flavor.

The NAOOA Seal indicates a high quality olive oil that is frequently tested by a sensory panel and meets even more rigorous standards than what is required by the United States government. To receive the seal, samples of Roland Extra Virgin Olive Oil are taken directly from the marketplace for analysis. Receiving the seal indicates that the product tested meets or exceeds the International Olive Council (IOC) standards. For more than 50 years, the IOC has been recognized as the worldwide quality-standard-setting body for the olive oil industry and its standard is the basis for the newly implemented USDA standard.

Filippo Berio Olive Oil Invests in National Advertising Campaign

As the $1 billion olive oil retail category continues to experience a period of high growth, Filippo Berio Olive Oil, the leading U.S. brand, is capitalizing on the industry’s expansion by asserting itself as the category leader with a new $7-9MM national advertising campaign. Greater recognition of the health benefits of olive oil and the awareness of the Mediterranean diet, of which olive oil is a staple, are just some of the factors contributing to the increase in domestic olive oil consumption. This has led the United States to surpass Greece in the rankings of olive oil consumption – only falling behind Italy and Spain. Filippo Berio’s national campaign, launching the first week in October, is the largest consumer marketing investment in the company’s 150-year history.

For a century and a half, producing high quality, delicious olive oil based on the principles set forth by their founder – Filippo Berio – has remained the company’s sole focus. The new campaign, set to run through September 2014, focuses on bringing this story to life through television, print, and online advertising featuring the new tagline “The First & Last Name in Olive Oil.

“Extensive quantitative and qualitative research revealed that consumers recognized Filippo Berio as the only olive oil brand with two names – signifying that there was an actual person behind the product – but they craved additional historical information on how Filippo established himself as the olive oil expert within his Italian community,” said Dave Scheiber, Vice President, Marketing, Filippo Berio Olive Oil. “By bringing our founder’s story to the forefront of our campaign we are paying homage to the authenticity, heritage, and craftsmanship that are exclusive to our brand while further solidifying our position as today’s olive oil expert in consumers’ minds.”

The national TV campaign invites consumers to travel back in time to the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside in 1867 to meet a young Filippo Berio honing his craft to produce an olive oil he thought worthy of sharing with the cooks of his community. After Filippo successfully impresses his neighbors at the town piazza with a culinary creation that showcases his olive oil, the commercial transitions to a modern day kitchen, where a contemporary woman uses Filippo Berio Olive Oil as she prepares a family meal.  The commercials will air on a variety of major cable channels including Bravo, Food Network and CNN, giving Filippo Berio 100 percent share of voice ownership on television for the category.

The print campaign features vintage photos of Filippo Berio hard at work, along with the tagline and a new bottle label design the company is rolling out as part of the national campaign. Filippo’s picture, a new addition to the bottle, is prominently featured alongside his handwritten signature, which has been an essential part of every bottle of Filippo Berio Olive Oil since 1867. The research showed that adding the founder’s image to the bottles, along with his signature, helped lend credence to the story of the man behind the name as well as trustworthiness regarding the quality of the product. The print ads will appear in national magazines including Cooking LightFood & Wine and Real Simple. Online, the new creative will be featured in a series of flash banners and rich media units on sites like FoodNetwork.com and AllRecipes.com, driving to the Filippo Berio website and providing access to search and print from a collection of 300+ recipes.

Filippo Berio’s significant 2013-2014 advertising campaign, developed by COLANGELO SYNERGY MARKETING of Darien, CT, the brand’s agency of record since 2002, is just the start of new initiatives planned for the company. Filippo Berio is also releasing two new extra virgin olive oil flavors, which will be hitting store shelves later this year. Delicato, a mild, light-bodied flavor that provides a smooth, mellow taste, and Robusto, a bold, full-bodied flavor that provides a strong, vibrant taste, will join the brand’s current lineup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Olive Oil and Extra Light Olive Oil. Actor Louis Lombardi’s brand-new line of pastas, olives, olive oils and pasta sauces will make its bow to the public with the launch of a website at LOMBARDIUSA.COM on Wednesday. That’s right, this Wednesday, September 25.

Mr. Lombardi was kind enough to sit down with Gourmet News for the whole story of how he came to create a line of foods that he hopes will bring more families back to the dinner table at home instead of around the table at a neighborhood fast food joint. Watch for that story in the November issue of Gourmet News, released to our online readers on September 25.

Drizzle a Healthy Oil to Amp up the Flavors in your Food

A good quality extra virgin olive oil or balsamic vinegar contain many health benefits, can enrich the flavor of food, and have the necessary cooking versatility to make a sumptuous meal. Finesse your summer menu with Louianna Certified Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Certified Organic Balsamic Vinegar – two pantry staples that were utilized in many of the recipes created by the competing chefs on season three of Food Network Canada’s Top Chef Canada. Recipes featured on the show can be found on the Food Network Canada website.

“Be it a simple dinner for two or large family gathering, using high quality, fine ingredients such as Louianna Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar, will elevate the flavour and experience every time,” commented Mark McEwan, celebrity chef, restaurateur (One Restaurant, North 44, Bymark, Fabbrica) and head judge on Top Chef Canada. “What I love about experimenting in the kitchen is that you can take something as simple as everyday comfort foods and demonstrate inventiveness and vitality with a simple drizzle of a fine oil, balsamic, or even a sprinkle of fresh herbs.” McEwan has chosen to sell the Louianna Certified PDO Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and PDO Organic Balsamic Vinegar at his McEwan gourmet marketplace at The Shops at Don Mills in Toronto, ON.

For an even more unusual pick-me-up for a family meal, look for the Stoger Seed Oils, a line of four finishing oils that are new to the American market. Brought the the U.S. by Marietta DeAngelo of Culinary Imports from the Austrian family farm where she spent time as an exchange student when she was 15 years old, these seed oils are cold-pressed from pumpkin, chile, tomato, and cherry seeds. The cherry seed oil won a sofi Award from the Specialty Food Association this year. The sofi Award recognizes outstanding innovation and quality and is essentially the equivalent of an Academy Award for the gourmet food industry. Thousands of products are nominated for the awards each year, and only a couple dozen or so go home with the sofi Gold Awards that represent the best of the best. These oils are just coming onto the American market, so don’t expect them to be easy to find on your local supermarket shelves yet, but keep an eye out. Then when you get your hands on them, they can be drizzled across a wide variety of foods, made into salad dressings or used as dipping oils for bread to add an extra layer of flavor and a dazzling change of pace.
