Nonprofit Tea Tibet Wowed the Crowd at Natural Products Expo East

awardTea Tibet, a recently launched and utterly new concept, won two industry awards at this years’ Natural Products Expo East: Most Innovative Product and Best of the Press. Launched in the spring of 2013 as a cause-related project of Portland-based Kombucha Wonder Drink, Tea Tibet’s sole mission is to produce the very best tea for the benefit of the Tibetan people.  All profits (100 percent) from Tea Tibet support Tibetan educational projects, schools and orphanages.

A Passionate Ideal… Steeped in Tibetan Tradition

Tea Tibet came to be when renowned Tibetan healer, Dr. Tashi Rabten approached veteran tea expert, Stephen Lee, Co-founder of five tea brands, including Stash & Tazo, and now Kombucha Wonder Drink, to spearhead this unprecedented project.

CompassionENG_3862Using the finest organic, fair traded teas from the Darjeeling region of India’s Himalayan foothills along with botanicals from around the world, Tea Tibet’s initial (and now award-winning) offering consists of five flavors: Compassion (Darjeeling), Peace (herbal infusion), Harmony (spiced tea), Kindness (green tea), and Happiness (Oolong tea).  The packaging pays tribute to the five primary colors of the Tibetan prayer flag, and consumers may request a free mini-prayer flag from the company.  Each unique blend has been carefully crafted under the stewardship of Lee and offers superior appearance, taste, and aroma.  Currently distributed through UNFI, these fine teas are available in over 400 stores nation-wide with that number expected to triple by year’s end.

“We are both humbled and overjoyed by this tremendous media recognition and by that of our peers,” says Tea Tibet co-founder, Stephen Lee.  “Tea Tibet is very special to all of us, and for our young project to be recognized and embraced immediately further reinforces the importance of the goals and the world’s commitment to the betterment of Tibet and its people. We are indeed leveraging change, one sip at a time.”

The Most Innovative New Product Award is determined by popular vote among the 22,000+ attendees at the Expo.  The Best of the Press Award is determined by popular vote among press attendees at the Expo.

Tetley Responds to Customer Tastes with Black & Green Blend

Tetley heard from consumers that they want to include green tea in their diet for health purposes, but many do not like the taste, which can be bitter. Most people prefer the taste of black tea to green. Tetley B&G Left

Tetley responded to this consumer feedback with a tea that offers a full flavored black tea taste profile, but with the goodness of green tea: the Black & Green Blend. Black & Green presents tea drinkers with the opportunity to get the best of both in one cup – full flavored black tea with the goodness of green tea, but without the bitter taste.

Tetley Black & Green will be available in retailers nationwide as well as on TetleyUSA.com. It’s available online now and should start appearing on store shelves in the coming weeks. Tetley Black & Green is available in a 72-count box for a suggested retail price of $4.39.

Plus, the show was a hotbed of innovative new products and smart classroom-setting dialogues on industry topics. Some of the key issues at this year’s event were sustainability, supply-chain transparency, organic, quality, labeling and terroir and tea. And while we’ve said it before, it still holds true that now is an exciting time for tea and the beverage industry, and we can’t wait to see what develops as a result of all the innovations and industry-wide discussions.”

Aged Earl Grey – Italy

Real Italian bergamot orange is laid atop black tea to naturally absorb the orange scent, resulting in a one-of- a-kind rich Earl Grey tea with subtle citrus notes.

Breakfast Blend – England

Traditional blend of four robust and distinct black teas makes for a hearty yet balanced morning cup of tea – perfect for all those Brits!

Golden Chai – India

Black tea with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and other spices make for a rich exotic blend – an enchanting taste of India.

Mate Lemon Green – Brazil

The Guarani tribe of South America enjoys yerba mate as a daily tonic. Blended with lemon myrtle and green tea, this blend has a bright lemon taste with earthy undertones.

Jasmine Green – China

Originating in the Song Dynasty, this fragrant green tea was reserved for the Imperial Court. Jasmine flowers are laid atop green tea leaves and their scent is naturally embraced. This smooth green tea has layers of subtle fragrance and hints of moonlight.

Gunpowder Green – Taiwan

This green tea is made by rolling tea leaves into tiny pellets. Early British traders thought they resembled gunpowder, and gave this tea its distinct name. Appearing in Taiwan in the 19th century, it was embraced for its hint of smoky flavor and full-bodied smooth taste.

Rooibos – South Africa

Cultivated and consumed in South Africa for centuries for its healing properties, this herbal teasan, also known as red tea, features rich earthy vanilla notes.

Moroccan Mint – Morocco

Known as “nana mint” in North Africa, this single-origin herbal beverage is light and lively with a sweet spearmint flavor.
